Mentors are adults that say "yes, you can!" to a child. They are the grown-ups we’ve all known during our childhood who took the time to listen, taught us how to skate, cheered us on to score the winning goal or consoled us when we didn’t.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters are mentors who provide responsible friendship to boys and girls who need and want role models. Find out how your child or a child you know can benefit from having a special friend:

Eligibility...who we serve
Throughout Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, our volunteers provide caring and consistent friendships to more than 1,000 kids who need that extra someone. And they do so with the support and guidance of our highly trained staff of child development professionals.

Our Big Brothers & Big Sisters serve as mentors to boys & girls between the ages of 6 and 16 who can greatly benefit from a friendship with a caring adult role model. Nearly 80% of the children in our program are African-American, Latino/a, or Asian Pacific Islander.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters "Bigs" are men and women who are at least 18 years old, live in L.A. County or the Inland Empire, and have the desire to bring little moments of BIG magic to a child's life. A Big is a special friend and mentor, offering friendship and support to their Little Brother/Sister on a one-to-one basis. Big and Little Brothers and Sisters spend quality time together at least twice a month for a minimum of one year enjoying recreational, cultural and educational activities, and participating in agency-sponsored group activities – anything that lets a child know that someone else cares for them, pays attention to them and lets them safely enjoy their childhood.

Our volunteers are thoroughly screened by our professional staff through:

  • A criminal background check and driving record check
  • A thorough, one-to-one interview with a professional staff
  • Three personal and professional reference checks
Additionally, in our community program, no volunteer is ever matched with a child without the review and approval of the child’s parent or guardian.

Referring a child you know, or enrolling your own child into our program is safe and easy. All information you share with us is confidential. Once your request is received, a member of our staff will call you and help you find out if this is the right program for your child.

Also, while we will accept referrals from teachers, grandparents, guidance counselors, neighbors and other concerned individuals, enrollment in our program requires approval and participation by a child’s parent or legal guardian.
