Big Brothers Big Sisters is very privileged to have the contribution of this limited-edition original, hand-printed etching, which is Toba Khedoori's very first print. Khedoori's selection as the artist to celebrate the Big Brothers Big Sisters 50th anniversary was made by an arts committee that included internationally acclaimed artists Vija Celmins and Richard Serra, former MOCA Los Angeles Director, Richard Koshalek, MOCA curator Elizabeth Smith, Hammer Museum and former MoMA curator Gary Garrels, and prominent Los Angeles-area art collector Lenore Greenberg. The committee was co-chaired by BBBS Board member Joni Moisant Weyl and her husband, Sidney Felsen of Gemini G.E.L. Founded in 1966, Gemini is the most prestigious collaborative printmaking workshop in the country.
Khedoori is one of Contemporary Art's most talented rising stars. Of Iraqi descent, Khedoori was born in Sydney, Australia in 1964, and lives and works in Los Angeles. She is an artist who depicts minimalism's 3-dimensional space on a 2-dimensional surface. Possessed of an enigmatic appreciation for the home, it's psychologically charged spaces and transcendental geometries, her subjects are man-made places and things: doors, rooms, furniture and buildings. Her most classic images are drawings of singular objects with repeating patterns, such as the windows depicted in this print.
Khedoori was recently the recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. She has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the St. Louis Art Museum, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C., and the Museum für Gegenswartskunst, Basel, Switzerland, among others. Khedoori's work is a part of many important national and international private and museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of Art, New York; MOCA Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
